“We’ve all been through it. Some of us still go through it. But never give up.” (Interview with Alex Curtis and Andre Giovanni of Outlander)-
Q: Can you introduce yourself and tell me what part you have in Outlander?
Turtle: I’m Alex (Turtle) Curtis I play drums and do basic management for the band. On the phone with me is our vocalist, Andre Chavez. He runs all of our merchandising and has the wacky side of ideas for videos and photos. ;p
Q: How did Outlander become a band?
Turtle: Andre and I met a while back when I was “being a manager” for a friends band while he was meeting with them for printing merch. After hanging out a bit while he was in his old band we decided to partner up for Warped Tour last year to make sure his clothing line would make it through the hell of a summer camp that it is. Shortly after Warped, his band broke up and we decided to start a new band. I ended up leaving during the fall to work with Woe, Is Me… as Austin Thornton’s drum tech. When I came home and heard the news that Austin and the band split I decided it was time to take this band seriously. Our good friends Josh and Connor had been in a band a while back that just recently broke up so it was a no brainer to pick them up and seeing as we have all lived with each other on and off it just made sense to have a band full of really good friends.
Q: Is their any meaning or story behind the band’s name?
Andre: Outlander: a foreigner or stranger. When I met Turtle was running his mouth (as usual). He corrected me on something about printing shirts and then pointed out a flaw in my plan that I had for something (can’t remember what plan it was) He was a complete stranger at the time, as well as all the current members of this band. Turtle put us together and said let’s make music soooo… Strangers…(wait.. that’s a lame band name) so…Outlander (that’s better).
Q: What was the fan reaction after releasing your teaser for ”The Restless”?
Turtle: We have had a great reaction so far. A lot of the fans and friends of Woe I met on tour are stoked on it and have been sharing the page so I’m hoping to see more support soon but, I think I’m more stoked to give out the song on the Cali dates of Warped Tour. All of us will be working at the Paper Alligator booth talking with anyone and everyone!
Q: Do you have an official release date for the single?
Alex & Andre: Tuesday, June 25th :D
Q: If you can say, what is the song about?
Andre: Ummm… I don’t know how to put it. I intended to write the song about…. (brainfart) Do I get to phone a friend? It’s about how we scar at a young age and how those scars carry on through our lives. Though we end up spending time trying to fill these holes, we end up getting nowhere because we don’t notice we actually have them.
Q: Are you currently writing or recording a debut ep or album?
Turtle: Yes and no. We are working on writing. For an ep… maybe. For an album? probably not. We want to try and put out at least a song a month till September or so that way we always have something new to give fans. I think handing a ton of songs over at once just overwhelms people sometimes.
Q: How would you describe your music?
Andre: Fire… hahah. If you took the Vocals from It Dies Today, Guitar of early Bring Me The Horizon and blended a bit of Architects (UK), Saosin and Woe, Is Me on top. You would have us.
Q: If there was any label you could sign to, which label would it be and why?
Andre: Metal Blade. They really know how to market and distribute their bands well. As work very well as a family with their artist.
Turtle: Rise. As much as a lot of people hate them, I love everything they have put out and they are very good to their bands.
Q: Who are your musical influences?
Andre: It Dies Today, The Agony Scene, As I Lay Dying and Underoath.
Turtle: Underoath, Lower Definition, Of Machines and Bayside.
Q: Do you have any upcoming band news you’d like to share?
Turtle: The Restless will be up Tuesday the 25th Maybe a few more surprises we will bring up again soon as long as they keep updated on The Wellz Street Journal ;)
Q: Is there any last thing you’d like to add?
Turtle: Just expect some merch maybe a music video and the new songs to be some of their favorites! :)
Andre: If you have a dream, never let anyone tear you down. We’ve all been through it. Some of us still go through it. But never give up. Love you all :)
